The University of Dundee was established by Royal Charter on 1 August 1967. The creation of the University was due to increasing political pressures to admit more students to higher education. Dr Alec MacQueen, M.B., Ch.B., M.R.C.P.E., joined the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry at Queens College, Dundee in 1950 where he remained for the rest of his academic career. His research interest at first centred on diabetics but he soon became interested in problems of medical ethics such as euthanasia, organ transplants and abortion.
